What Is Testosterone And How Does It Work?
Testosterone is the key male sex hormone that is responsible for a man’s sexual and reproductive development.
It is considered to be the most important of all male hormones. As we pass through puberty, it is testosterone that changes our body, encouraging the growth of body hair, our deepening voice, muscle tone, strength, and of course the maturing of our sexual organs.
From puberty onwards it regulates our fertility, moods, levels of body fat, performance and in fact pretty much everything considered ‘manly’.
Women too, make and need testosterone, but too a much lesser degree than men.
This most masculine of hormones belongs to class known as androgens. Sometimes these are referred to as steroid hormones or even anabolic steroids.
Men make the hormone in the leidig cells which are found in the testes, some is also produced by the adrenal glands.
The demand for testosterone is controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain.
This sends messages to the pituitary gland which in turn produces a chemical that stimulates the testes to manufacture testosterone.
The whole process is actually quite a complex series of events carried out by various chemicals and hormones in the blood stream.
Testosterone is involved in the development of the male sex organs before birth.
Also as we pass through puberty and into adulthood, the secondary development that leads to sexual maturity. Penis and testes size, along with body hair are all directly attributed to the effects of testosterone.
It also plays a crucial part in the regulating and control of our sex drive, fertility, semen production, red blood cell production and fat distribution.
It also helps to control and maintain our muscle tone, mass and strength.
But testosterone goes even further. It is also responsible for our general health and well being, and stops the onset of many health conditions.
As one example, it has been proven that maintaining good levels of the hormone can help safeguard against osteoporosis in men
Women also produce testosterone. It is made by their ovaries and adrenal glands, female testosterone production is around 5% of that found in men.
Men with excess testosterone can be aggressive, and can suffer from bad acne and increased body hair. Ironically enough, however, it can also cause reduced libido in some cases.
In women too much of the male hormone can actually cause them problems.
These can include increased body hair growth, deepening of the voice, irregular menstrual cycles, and in severe cases, enlarged clitoris (so it resembles a small penis).
Women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome usually have high levels of male hormones, which can also cause fertility problems.
In a healthy male, testosterone levels should be between 300ng/dl and 1000ng/dl.
Levels can easily be checked by a simple blood test, with the morning being the most accurate time of the day to take the test.
When levels drop below 300ng/dl the man is considered to have low – T (officially know as hypogonadism).
Symptoms of low T can include:
- Poor sex drive
- Weak, or non existent erections
- Increased breast tissue
- Shrunken genitals
- Loss of muscle tone
- Reduced bone strength
- Increased belly fat
If low testosterone is diagnosed, a doctor may suggest that a course of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) be prudent.
This involves man made synthetic testosterone being given to the man. There are many different methods of treatment, and include:
Care has to be taken, especially when topical treatments are used as transferring the hormone to a child or female partner can have some quite detrimental side effects.
As an example, when using gels or creams, certain precautions must be taken. These include washing hands thoroughly and covering the application area so skin to skin contact with others does not occur.

Side Effects Of Testosterone Therapy
The full safety of TRT is still largely unknown. It has however been linked to some quite adverse side effects that include:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Increased risk of stroke and heart problems
- Liver and kidney problems
- Hair loss
- Loss of muscle strength
- Slurred speech
- According to the Mayo Clinic in the US, TRT can also be a precursor to prostate cancer (read their article here)
Overall, many experts agree that the benefits of drug based TRT are outweighed by the potential side effects and risks to life.

Anabolic Steroids and Bodybuilding
The bodybuilding industry is simply huge with billions of dollars being spent each year on pills, potions and other supplements that promise help men boost their muscle mass and strength.
There are lots of bodybuilders who turn to injectable anabolic steroids to replicate the effects of androgen hormones to speed and maximise the results of their workouts.
Although highly effective in many cases, their use is very controversial with many men suffering some serious, even life changing side effects.
The problem is even worse for women (yes some do use them too)
Basically, anabolic steroids should never be used, they can kill, or at best leave you with serious health problems.
Natural Testosterone Boosters
With the concerns surrounding drug based and synthetic TRT treatments, more and more men are turning to natural supplements.
A good natural T-booster contains proven herbal extracts, vitamins and minerals that work in the body to promote and encourage it to produce more of its own genetic testosterone.
Because the testosterone being produced is your own natural hormone, your body will only react in a good way to it.
With noticeable improvements in muscle tone, energy, moods and sex drive being very welcome benefits.
In the gym men who use natural T-boosters will find that they can power through workouts far quicker and easier.
Their results will improve and their bodies will develop larger, stronger more defined muscles. – All without the risks and side effects of anabolic steroids.
I have studied all aspects of testosterone treatments, both natural and drug based. They are all detailed on this website. Also from my research I have compiled a list of the best natural treatment options.
Wether you are a younger gym going man who desperately wants to build larger muscles. Or an older guy who is experiencing the effects of low T, there is something on the list to help you all.
