The Effects Of Testosterone On Your Brain

Most of us know the physical benefits of having good testosterone levels. But did you know that it can also have a profound effect on your mental and cognitive functions too.

Testosterone levels in a healthy man should range between 300ng.dl and 1000ng.dl. From our thirties, its quite natural for our natural testosterone production to reduce, usually by 1-2% per year.

Should they drop below 300ng.dl, you are officially classed as being hypogonadic.

The journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism  reported that tests on healthy older men showed that lower than normal testosterone levels impaired cognitive functions.

Where as those with higher levels faired much better in cognitive tests.

The men with low T showed significant signs of reduced ability to process visual information, reading maps for instance, playing certain sports and even driving

A similar study confirmed that an 8 week course of testosterone boosting supplements normalised cognitive ability in most men.

Testosterone Could Also Be Linked To Dementia

It is believed that testosterone has a protective role in the brain. Studies have shown that many sufferers of dementia do in fact have lower than normal levels of testosterone. 

A study by Hogervosrt et al showed that the link between the two was so strong that they could be classed as co-morbidities.

One interesting point is that there is no link between dementia in females and testosterone levels.

Low Levels of Free testosterone have also been linked with the presence of Aβ40 protein which is a strong indicator of dementia.

To Sum Up

There is no doubt that testosterone is key to us having good muscle tone, strength and energy. It is also responsible for our sex drive and performance. 

What these studies have shown is that testosterone levels can also be linked to cognitive functions, spacial awareness, memory and concentration.

Low T has also been linked to cognitive illnesses such as dementia.
